Netbook Gamer - Finding the best games for your portable netbook UMPC laptop
Within a deep forest

deep_forest free netbook game to downloadSecret has found this little free game called "Within a Deep Forest", why not download it and check it out for yourself?

Runs great on a netbook or laptop. Not really great replay value, but awesome on the first go. If you're really good, you can beat it in a few hours. Can be frustrating at points, but it's overall a really fun game. You control a bouncy ball, a failed expreiment by an evil scientist. The scientist plans to detonate a bomb that would destroy the world. It's up to you to stop him.

Interstate '76 Arsenal

Interstate76 cruising on your netbookT3hCynic found this, another oldie but goldie! Again, I remember this coming out, was a riot!

Muscle cars. 1970s muscle cars. 1970s muscle cars with WEAPONS. What's not to love?

The creation of a simple batch file to kill explorer when you enter the game and bring it back up when you exit is required to make this game work nicely. This was an awesome game back in the day, and I'm happy that I'm finally able to play it without having to regress to an older version of Windows (currently running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit).

Dungeon Keeper 2

Dungeon Keeper on your NetbookReddwarffreak likes his dungeons! Actually, I remember getting into this game when it first came out, I thought it was pretty amazing!

Dungeon Keeper 2 is a strategy game developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts in 1999[1] for Microsoft Windows. It was released in Europe and North America in June 1999. It was the sequel to Peter Molyneux's Dungeon Keeper and predecessor to the canceled Dungeon Keeper 3. Molyneux did not have an active role in the creation of the Dungeon Keeper 2, though many of his ideas lived on from the previous game. Like its predecessor, players take the role of a dungeon keeper, building and defending an underground dungeon from the would-be heroes that invade it, as well as from other keepers. In the game's campaign mode, the player is charged with recovering the portal gems from each area in order to open a portal to the surface. This was charged as a setup for the sequel, where the gems would be used to invade the surface world and defeat the faction of goodly heroes.

Comments:runs good in 800x600 but if you do custom resolution 1024x600 it looks exactly the same

Freedom Fighters

freedom_fightersThere's no stopping Reddwarffreak....

Freedom Fighters, originally titled Freedom: The Battle For Liberty Island, is a 2003 third-person shooter video game available for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox and Microsoft Windows that is set in an alternate history. The player takes the role of Christopher Stone, a plumber-turned American Resistance movement leader who fights against the Red Army that invades and occupies New York City. It was developed by IO Interactive, using a modified version of the Hitman 2: Silent Assassin game engine, and published by Electronic Arts.

Tropico

tropicoFrom Reddwarffreak more gaming malarky..

Tropico is a construction and management simulation computer game developed by PopTop Software and published by Gathering of Developers in April 2001.[2] The game sees the player taking the role of "El Presidente," the ruler of an island in the Caribbean during the Cold War era from the 1950s onward. Games based on Caribbean city-building have been created before[citation needed], but Tropico was the first to be centered around Cuban Revolution and Cold War themes. The game is tongue-in-cheek in its presentation of banana republics, using a great deal of humor while still referencing such topics as totalitarianism, electoral fraud, and the interventions of powerful companies (United Fruit is implied) and the Cold War superpowers (the United States and Soviet Union).

Comments: runs brilliant but no way to get 1024x600 as of yet
Hardware:samsung n130

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2

nfsReddwarffreak again, this time mobile and fast....

Hot Pursuit 2 draws primarily from the gameplay and style of Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit; its emphasis was on evading the police and over-the-top tracks featuring lengthy shortcuts. As with the game's predecessor, the player also has the option to play as a police officer trying to arrest speeders. To do so the player rams the speeding vehicle multiple times to disable it. The player must turn on their lights and sirens while in pursuit, and they automatically turn off after arresting the suspect. Police can call for a road block, spike strips, and request help from a helicopter to assist in chasing the target vehicle. At the end, the player is awarded for the cars busted. In the PlayStation 2 version this mode is called You're the Cop mode while in the PC, Gamecube and Xbox versions it's Be the Cop mode.

Comments: runs good on samsung n130 as long as you map the keys to something else as arrow keys are too small LOL and turn settings to low\mediumlow 1024x600 naturally supported

The Sims 2 and Expansions

The Sims playable on your netbookReddwarffreak dropped by with more Netbook gaming news...

Players control their Sims in various activities and forming relationships in a manner similar to real life. The Sims 2, like its predecessor, The Sims, does not have a defined final goal; gameplay is open-ended. Sims have life goals, wants and fears, the fulfillment of which can produce both positive or negative outcomes. All Sims age, and can live over 100 Sim days depending on the degree of which their aspirations are fulfilled. The Sims 2 builds on its predecessor by allowing Sims to age through six stages of life and incorporating a 3D graphics engine. Although gameplay is not linear, story-lines exist in the game's pre-built neighbourhoods. Pleasantview is based 25 years after the town in the original The Sims. Strangetown's storyline is based on the supernatural, and is loosely connected with Pleasantview. Veronaville's characters are based on Shakespearian characters.

Comments:tried on my samsung n130 and as long as you turn all graphics settings to low but still a excellent game and hours of gameplay

Word Rescue and Math Rescue

math-rescue doing sums on netbooks, it all adds upMore from Jeffrey Piatt...

Both are Apogee's only edutainment titles and are one of the last of the old style of educational titles. put out in 1992 and built with the same engine that powered the Duke Nukem games. The plot centers around the Gruzzles witch steal either all of the numbers or words. In Word Rescue you match words to pictures by jumping over rectangles along the level witch plays like any other platformer to exit each level you must correctly match all words to complete the key to the exit. the game keeps a non violent feel by having you slime the guzzles making them go away instead of killing them. Math Rescue plays much the same way you have to collect numbers and solve math problems to exit the level. Both allow you to play either as a boy or girl. both also split episodes in classic apogee fashion as separate exe files. The low system requirements make it a excellent game to install on to an older computer to give to a young child. Apogee sells both as download-able games bundled with dosbox

Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold

blake_stone running riot on a Netbook near youMore FPS goodness from Jeffrey Piatt....

This is Apogee's followup to Wolfenstine 3d. Originally released December 5, 1993 one week before the more graphically impressive doom. While doom continued the basic run and shoot action of id last game Blake added new action elements to the concept some would not be seen until half-life came out. One new game play element is the informants scattered across the levels these were randomly placed actors who instead of shooting at you gave you hints and items including an ammo clip and credits for the vending units on the walls. also some guards would play dead before you killed them. other elements included being able to backtrack levels. some elements also appeared in doom like the transporter and the automap. the graphics are the same level as wolf3d so the game is not graphically impressive but it is still worth a play for any fps fan being made for a 486 makes it an excellent Netbook game.
